Well, we took Jasper back yesterday. Cute doggy, with some good things about him, but also some bad things...such as nipping at all the kids. He followed me around the house and liked me, but he DEFINITELY didn't like Charley and was not really a kid dog. Oh well, live and learn. We now know that we want more of a loving and "joyful" dog...not one that seems depressed most of the time.

I know you're looking for a small dog, but the BEST kid dog I have ever known of is a boxer. They are GREAT with kids, even kids they don't know.
Joanie gave us one while in CA... John and I were still little and even though the dog had belonged to a single person, she always loved all the attention we gave her and yes, put up with a lot of things too! We got another boxer here in Mexico and the same story!
